Brownfield remediation is the process of taking a previously developed site that has been contaminated by hazardous or toxic materials and making it feasible to be redeveloped for future use. The use of geosysnthetic membranes for the remediation of brownfield sites will make sure that the contamination is contained and will no longer impact the environment while also carrying added benefits from reusing an existing site.
Geotextiles generally come in two different varieties; Woven textiles, and Non-woven textiles. Woven textiles have many useful applications, ranging from soil stabilization in roads and slopes, to erosion control and more. Non-woven textiles can be used for drainage, erosion/sedimentation control, cushioning of geomembrane liners from sharp aggregate and more.
Wastewater lagoons are used for the treatment of wastewater through physical, biological, and chemical processes. There are three main types of wastewater lagoons; Anaerobic lagoons, Naturally Aerobic lagoons, and Aerated lagoons. Each of which when lined properly, and under the proper conditions, will provide an efficient process for treatment.
Vapour barriers are used to stop the migration of fluids through walls or even harmful gases that rise from the ground. With the correct geomembrane liner system, these fluids or gasses can be successfully and safely stopped from entering a building or structure. There are many different liners that will work in specific situations to solve many problems.
Tank Farms sometimes contain toxic or hazardous materials for processing plants or refineries. Special chemical-resistant geomembranes are used as a secondary containment system which line beneath the Tank Farms. The areas are built to be able to contain the volume of the contents in the tanks should there be a leak or failure.
Tailings Dams are constructed as containment means for the water-sodden, fine-grained waste product (tailings) from a mineral-processing plant. The dams are specially made to resist the seepage of the contained tailings with the help of geomembrane liners until the closure of the mine and for as long as needed.
Sedimentation Ponds are built on construction sites and permanent sites to help maintain and treat the run-off from disturbed or eroded soils to keep them from polluting any nearby waterways or lakes and bodies of water. The ponds allow the fines in the water to settle before being discharged.
Potable Water Storage reservoirs are used to supply local areas with potable water for many uses. The reservoirs require specially engineered material for contact with potable water, and at the same time need it to contain the water within. Multiple materials can be chosen, from concrete embedment liners to potable water grade NSF-61 certified liners, to completely and safely line Potable Water Storage reservoirs.
Landfills are filled with a lot of human garbage, and they are required to follow stringent environmental guidelines, and with that follows a highly engineered liner system to contain them. The first part of a landfill is the impermeable bottom layer to contain the waste as it is being placed. Once the landfill is full it needs to be ‘capped’ over to completely contain the waste and to eliminate any possibility of future leachate from the waste.
The purpose of Hydro Canals is to create a non-restrictive passageway for water to get to a hydroelectric station some great distance away. The purpose of lining the passageway is to greatly increase the green-usage of the available water by reducing the seepage of the water through the canal walls as it is traveling towards its destination. With the installation of a liner system, the water can easily be retained and directed to where it needs to go.
Heap Leach Pads are used in the mining industry when using the Heap Leaching method of chemically extracting precious metals by dripping specific chemicals over excavated materials in order to extract and collect the metals. The Leach Pads are specially engineered to use the correct liner to withstand the chemical leachate and massive weights experienced on the liner.
The irrigation of golf courses and agricultural nurseries require a lot of water, which can be supplied with Water Retention Ponds that can be made to supply any size required.
Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL’s) are a composite material composed of a low-permeability sodium bentonite clay layer sandwiched between two layers of geotextile. When the bentonite layer becomes hydrated it swells to form a low permeability clay liner, restricting any further passage of liquids. GCL’s can provide approximately the same hydraulic protection as one metre of compacted clay.
Floating covers are used when a pond or lagoon is required to be covered to help prevent evaporation, reduce contamination, reduce treatment costs and in the case of a water reservoir; to improve overall water quality. Not only do they contain what is underneath the liner, but they also have to deal with any accumulation of water on the top, and this is taken care of with a specially engineered float and sand-tube arrangement to direct the surface water to be pumped off.
Sometimes when the availability of a steady supply of water, for the purpose of suppressing a fire, is not achievable (Being in a remote location, the infrastructure is to weak to supply, or even if the infrastructure is not available to a commercial location), Fire Protection Reservoirs will be constructed as a solution.
Depending on the size and application of the project to be lined, the liner can be pre-fabricated into larger sections to efficiently reduce the field installation time required to place and seam together, greatly reducing costs. Also, if the factors are right, the project could be pre-fabricated into one piece that the contractor could install with minimal effort with their own forces.
Emergency Dump Ponds are constructed intermediately along pipelines or near valves as a means to be able to release the contents for various reasons; repairs, inspections, or even decommissioning. The ponds should be designed to contain any anticipated volume that might need to be drained.
Decorative ponds can add another level of architectural beauty to a landscape that will set it farther apart than any other. Whether it is a large-scale pond in front of a business or golf course to a pond in the yard of a residential home, with the right liner and the right plan, any pond can be lined to contain the water and look great.
Contaminated Soils are a hazard to the environment if they are left exposed. With the appropriate containment methods, either through the use of geomembranes or geosynthetic clay liners, contaminated soils can be successfully contained from causing a further impact on the surrounding environment.
Baffle and Clearwell Curtains are a vertical geomembrane wall that are generally installed within ponds, lagoons, cisterns, etc., to eliminate the short-circuiting of intended circulation. The Baffles and Curtains restrict and redirect the flow of the contained fluids to promote a self-mixing circulation that will increase the time that the contained fluid is exposed to treatment chemicals or processes.
Aqua Dams are lightweight, flexible, and stable water filled barriers that can be used to contain, divert, and control the flow of water in virtually any project location. On-site requirements are just a portable pump, and the usually abundant local water supply.
Anaerobic Lagoons are a deep pond (generally 8-20ft) that pre-treat organic waste through a bacterial driven system. The 2 major purposes of anaerobic lagoons are:
- Pretreatment of high strength industrial waste waters.
- Pretreatment of municipal waste water to allow sedimentation of suspended solids as a pretreatment process.
